【コンセプト】
日本の歴史には、古くから受け継がれてきたものを大切に保存し続ける精神が深く根付いています。その精神を体現し、現代の中に今なお生き続ける伝統のひとつが「祭り」です。祭りは、近代国家としての日本が形成される以前から続く信仰、収穫の営み、そして地域共同体の結びつきに由来する伝統を今日まで受け継いでいます。
「マツリ Vol.1」は、2019年に開始した、日本各地の祭りを写真で記録し、視覚的アーカイブとして残すことを目的とした継続中のプロジェクトです。多くの祭りが歴史の中へと姿を消しつつある今もなお受け継がれている祭りを記録することの意義は、ますます大きくなっています。
本展では、2027年に刊行予定のプロジェクト第1巻より作品を選出し、ご紹介します。
【concept】
Throughout Japanese history, there is a sense of preservation of ancient things deeply ingrained in the culture. One tradition that personifies antiquity forever present in modernity is the Matsuri. Matsuris hold onto traditions that predate modern Japan, stretching back to the earliest integration of religion, the harvest season, and communal participation.
MA-TSU-RI is an ongoing project, started in 2019, with the intent of creating a visual archive of various matsuri throughout the country. As many matsuri become relegated to history books, the need to document those still practiced becomes increasingly relevant.
This exhibition contains selections from the first volume of the project, to be released in 2027.

Nigel HoSang is a New York-born,New York-based visual artist specializing in photography and filmmaking. He is also a lighting specialist, designing lighting for photographers and cinematographers across editorial, commercial, and creative productions.
His clients and collaborators include Peloton, Urban Outfitters, Elle, Carolina Herrera, Contributer Magazine, TRACE Magazine, Vogue Japan, The FADER, and others.
